FAQ - Fjarðaferðir - East Iceland Boat Tours

To help you prepare for your adventure in East Iceland, we have gathered the questions we are most frequently asked about our tours, departures, safety, and practical details. Our aim is to provide clear and helpful information so you can feel confident and well prepared before setting off to explore the fjords with us.

  • Who are we?

Fjarðaferðir is a local tour company based in East Iceland, offering unforgettable tours by the Eastfjord sea. We specialise in small-group sightseeing and nature experiences, sharing the fjords, coastline, and hidden places of the East with visitors in a safe and personal way.

  • What kind of tours do you offer?

We offer locally narrated RIB boat tours, designed for travellers who want to experience the incredible Eastfjords from the water. Our tours focus on dramatic landscapes, nature, coastal history, and the unique atmosphere of the Eastfjords of Iceland.

  • Where do your tours depart from?

Fjarðaferðir tours are operated from the floating pier by the Bait Shack restaurant in Neskaupstaður, East Iceland - a fantastic base for exploring the dramatic landscapes of the Eastfjords.

  • What kind of boats do you use?

Our tours are operated on modern Rigid Inflatable Boats (RIB boats). These boats are built for stability, safety, and comfort, and are ideal for sightseeing along the fjords and coastline of Iceland. They also allow us to quickly reach remote areas and places that are not accessible by road.

  • Are the tours guided?

All tours are fully narrated by a local guide and skipper. Along the way, you will hear stories about the Eastfjords, the coastline, local landmarks, and the nature and wildlife found in the area.

  • Do I need to book in advance?

We strongly recommend booking in advance. To operate a scheduled tour, we generally need a minimum of 2 passengers and have a maximum capacity of 12 passengers, so booking ahead guarantees your preferred time.

  • Is the tour weather dependent?

Like all boat tours in Iceland, our tours depend on stable sea and weather conditions. Safety always comes first, and if conditions are not suitable, the tour may be rescheduled or cancelled on short notice.

  • What equipment do you provide?

We provide the necessary safety equipment for the tour, including a flotation suit and a life jacket. This keeps you warm and protected while travelling on the water, even on cooler days.

  • What should I wear?

We recommend wearing warm layers and comfortable clothes, plus gloves and a hat if the weather is chilly. Even in summer, the sea air in the Eastfjords can feel cold, especially at speed. Don't forget your sunglasses!

  • What is included in the tour?

    Your booking includes:

    • A 1 hr. RIB boat tour from Neskaupstaður
    • Safety equipment (flotation suit and life jacket)
    • Local narration and sightseeing stops (conditions permitting)
    • A drink at the Bait Shack after the tour
  • What will I see on the tour?

Every tour is a little different depending on the conditions that day, but our sightseeing tours typically include dramatic fjord landscapes, sea cliffs, rock formations, sea caves, and remote coastline. You may also see local wildlife such as seabirds, and sometimes even whales and other marine life depending on the season and conditions.

  • How long is the tour?

The tour typically lasts about 1 hour, not including the stop at the Bait Shack before and after the tour. Each tour is designed to give you a complete East Iceland experience on the water, with time for sightseeing, photos, and interesting information along the way, so the timing may vary.

  • Is the tour suitable for families?

RIB boat tours involve high speed and sea conditions can vary. For safety reasons, the minimum age is 10 years old, or 145 cm tall. When booking private tours, it is possible to take younger and smaller passengers on board as the tour route and speed will be adapted to your group's needs. Feel free to contact us directly for more information.

  • Do you offer private tours?

Yes, you can book a private tour with Fjarðaferðir! Private tours are ideal for families, groups, photographers, special occasions, or anyone who wants a more flexible experience in the magnificent Eastfjords.

  • Can I customise a private tour?

Absolutely. If you have a specific location, photography goal, or sightseeing interest in East Iceland, contact us and we will do our best to tailor the tour to your needs. We can even help you out with restaurant and hotel recommendations!
